About

Brian’s sister suggested he host a pair of episodes covering a childhood favorite of theirs, Nickelodeon’s Hey Dude, and thus the podcast’s fate was forever sealed. While it was a fun show to play-act in your backyard in 1992 as your neighbor tries to raise a single chicken inside city limits, does it hold upon under the scrutiny of modern eyes?

Hey Dude is a family-friendly sitcom that tells summer stories at the Bar None Ranch, an establishment owned by a dorky former accountant and staffed by lying teens. This week, all of the teens are telling one another’s secrets. Everyone is pissed, but none of the BTBs can figure out why any of these secrets are a big deal. Everyone’s worn a chicken suit here and there.

Spencer explores the gender dynamics on the show, while Van tries to remember both Hey Dude memories and Ben Affleck movie titles. Brian overanalyzes a character’s reaction for clues that this show actually had writers.

Highlights

-Brian’s sister (the famous akj519) and new nephew (Elias doesn’t have an email address yet) get a shout out!

-The BTBs discuss horse technology and one of the finest theme songs they’ve covered so far

-Who is “Muscle Beach” Eddie Hammerfink?

About

The Boys were a bit unimpressed with their first Hey Dude encounter, but “Dueling Ranches” more than made up for it. Mr. Ernst needs to get the rival Snake Eyes Ranch to restore the Bar None’s water access, so he challenges them to a staff baseball game. All three hosts are longtime baseball fans, so you’d better believe they were blown away by Nickelodeon’s take on America’s pastime.

Spencer is surprised by the show’s choice of hardball hero, while Van signs off on bringing back “rats!” as an exclamation in regular conversation. The guys can’t figure out what sort of league the Wildcats and Tornadoes are supposed to be in, and they don’t think the casting director has seen an athlete before.

The episode wraps up with a lively round of Swap Out and Van’s stylish reveal of a soon-to-be classic BTB show choice.

-What if Hey Dude used advanced sabermetrics?

-The eerie similarities between Mr. Ernst and Willie Tanner from ALF

-Baseball vs. monster trucks
